Frugal Travelers Can Be Jetsetters!

I love luxury travel, but my budget doesn’t! So when I came across the travel site jetsetter.com, I had to check it out. They offer gorgeous hotel rooms and upscale resorts at greatly reduced prices. I’ve been getting emails from them for a couple of months, and in most cases the deals (even greatly reduced) were still somewhat expensive or located in cities that I didn’t plan to visit. But I finally found a wonderful deal that I want to share with you. Continue Reading »

Fun Factory Tours

Toddlers are naturally inquisitive and factory tours are a great way for them to see firsthand how a favorite product is made (and usually get a free sample or a discount in their store). We live near one of the Jelly Belly factories and every few months we trek over there for a free tour (which is done on a train – bonus!), a paper tour hat and bag of jelly beans. We then head to the store and get bags of off-season and misshapen candy for a very discounted price. Continue Reading »

Check out your Local Library

This morning I watched my 3-year old daughter hold frogs, lobsters and turtles and learn far more information about all of these creatures than I could ever teach her. Did we take her on an expensive trip to the zoo or an aquarium? No, my local library had a guest speaker for free! This is one of many amazing experiences Kate has had at the library in her short life, again all of them being free! Continue Reading »

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

I don’t know about your toddlers, but mine are obsessed with any mode of transportation, particularly trains! I realize that in many parts of the country trains are not available for public use, but if you live in an area that they are (most likely a metropolitan area) you should take advantage of this cheap entertainment! When we lived within walking distance of a Chicago metra station, I used to walk there with my daughter during rush hour so she could watch all the trains go by (free entertainment!). When I was trying to potty-train her she was told if she had a week with no accidents, she could actually ride on the train. This cost a few dollars for the ticket, but A) it actually worked and B) it was an experience she’s still talking about 6 months later! We now live in a town that has an old fashioned streetcar. For $.50 a person, my kids can get a 2-mile ride around the Kenosha lakefront. Log on to the Railway Preservation web site for a list of streetcars in the US.

Unclaimed Cash — Are You Missing Some Money?

Here’s an interesting tidbit — there are billions of dollars in unclaimed cash sitting in government accounts, and some of it could belong to you! Many people are not aware that they may have forgotten funds from dormant bank accounts, insurance policies or safe deposit boxes just to name a few.  Fortunately there are a couple of free web sites that track this information: missingmoney.com and unclaimed.org. Just plug in your name and the name of states where you have lived to get the results. Also, you can check directly with your state treasurer’s office for unclaimed property. That’s how I found out that the State of Illinois was holding almost $600 in funds from a long forgotten life insurance policy. Continue Reading »

Finding Happiness

It’s hard to enjoy life for less or enjoy life at all, unless we’re truly happy. I recently came across a very old copy of Norman Vincent Peale’s book The Power of Positive Thinking, and in the chapter entitled “How to Create Your Own Happiness” I found a wonderful quote. It is as true today as it was over 40 years ago. I’m sharing it because perhaps, particularly in these economic times, having More Time Than Money can also mean taking the time to realize what’s really important in our lives. Here is my More Time Than Money “tip” for the day. May it touch each of you as it touched me.

“The way to happiness: keep your heart free from hate, your mind from worry. Live simply, expect little, give much. Fill your life with love. Scatter sunshine. Forget self, think of others. Do as you would be done by.”

Temporary Health Insurance

The new health care reform bill mandates state-run insurance exchanges, which are meant to help people who are not able to obtain insurance through an employer. This is the good news — the bad news, these exchanges won’t be available until the bulk of the bill takes effect January 1, 2014. So what are people in this position to do in the meantime? Particularly for those that may only need short term coverage, there is temporary health insurance available. Continue Reading »
